This is a BETA
MGO 4.0 is currently in beta, and MGO 3.8.8.1 will remain the main download on Nexusmods until 4.0 is final. You can find the 4.0 Beta releases on the FILES tab under Archived files, or via the MGO Discord .
This documentation is in beta too. There is more content to come, and as things are moving rapidly at the moment, some things here might not match what’s in the list perfectly. Please be patient. To provide documentation feedback, you can post in the #mod-documentation channel in Discord. You can find that channel by selecting on THE MOD LAB under Channels & Roles.
When Skyrim VR hit Steam in April 2018, it was unlike anything else. The state of the art for VR experiences has evolved considerably since that time, but Skyrim VR hasn’t received an official update since later the same month that it launched.
As luck would have it, people develop mods for Skyrim. A lot of mods.
Mad God’s Overhaul combines the best work from the modding community with the team’s own custom patches to painstakingly remaster Skyrim VR to create an immersive experience with no equal.
For MGO 4.0, Snippy Stockins and The Synergy Team have been hard at work rebuilding the list with the best mods available as of July 20261, working with mod authors to maximize compatibility and optimize settings, creating custom patches, manually adjusting the load order, and smoothing out the onboarding experience to make MGO the best it can be.
What's New In 4.0
MGO 4.0 builds on 3.8.8.1 with a lot of under-the-hood work and visible upgrades. Here are the highlights:
Smoother and more stable: A new set of engine fixes and performance tools, plus new crash protection, aims to make the game run better and crash less. Community Shaders Expanded (CSX) replaces the old shader setup, with Performance, Balanced, and Quality presets.
Easier setup: A new step-by-step setup guide walks you through choosing your VR runtime, controller bindings, and performance options.
Better VR menus and navigation: A modernized menu system, a new map and compass setup, and a world map overhaul.
More hands-on VR gameplay: Climb surfaces, throw objects, interact with torches, water, and instruments, gather resources more naturally, and enjoy improved combat contact and weapon feel.
Reworked combat and difficulty: A new combat and damage setup ( Skybane, Accuracy, and Valorbound) changes how fights play out. Some older combat mods and spell packs are gone.
Fresh look for gear, NPCs, and creatures: A new armor and clothing set, a new NPC overhaul, new dragons and wildlife, and refreshed locations and landscapes.
Richer audio: New weapon, magic, and ambient sound overhauls, plus new NPC voice reactions.
Optional AI companions: SkyrimNet and related tools are included, but they’re turned off by default.
What’s gone: Bruma, the Enigma quest mods, and a number of older spell packs and armor sets.
For every mod that’s been added, swapped, or removed, see What’s New in 4.0.
This guide will walk you through setting up MGO, from download and installation to configuration, and how the mod list changes some of Skyrim VR’s gameplay systems.
MGO includes over 1,700 mods. You don’t need to be familiar with all of them to enjoy yourself, and many of the old, less-immersive ways of doing things still work, so you don’t have to memorize all the new stuff at once (or ever). But if you don’t even know what’s possible, you won’t know how to make the gameplay more immersive and, dare I say, more fun.
The modding community has been busy lately! ↩︎
