Once you start a new game, there’s a bit more waiting to do before you’re really ready. You’ll also likely want to do some configuration before you set off on your adventure.
Compiling Shaders As the game starts up for the first time, Community Shaders will compile shaders so things load faster in-game and in future launches. It takes awhile, but that gives you some time to fine-tune the graphics configuration.

Compiling Shaders

Shaders are programs that run while drawing the game’s graphics to the screen (or screens, in VR). Mad God’s Overhaul uses Community Shaders (specifically, Community Shaders (Unofficial Fork)), a plugin with advanced graphical features that vanilla Skyrim does not support. This is what makes MGO’s dramatic visuals possible.

Character Creation

Like many big mod lists for Skyrim, Mad God’s Overhaul uses an alternate start mod that lets you create your character immediately, instead of after a 15-minute cart ride.
Skyrim’s vanilla character creator includes some presets and lets you tweak a few facial features, but there aren’t a ton of options. You certainly won’t be able to reproduce your favorite monstrosities from Oblivion.
Not this time! RaceMenu RaceMenu, included in MGO (along with RacemenuVR), adds far more sliders for you to adjust until your character is just as beautiful/handsome/nauseating as you’ve always dreamed.

Alternate Perspective

Skyrim’s opening cart ride is iconic. It’s neat! Once. Maybe twice. But if you haven’t already started dozens of new playthroughs, with any luck, you will. And sooner or later you’re going to pray that you never again hear the words, “Hey you, you’re finally awake!”
If you’ve never played Skyrim before and would like to experience the opening sequence as-is (more or less—this is modded, after all), it’s still available. You’re just no longer forced through it every single time.

Alternate Start (≤ 4.0 RC2)

MGO releases up to and including 4.0 RC2 included Alternate Start - Live Another Life to provide alternatives to the vanilla Skyrim intro. Here’s the lowdown.
